Michael Abels

Title: Gift of the Machine
AI Inspired Software: AIVA
Pianist: Dominic Cheli

How they used AI:
Michael Abels uploaded a short composition of his for solo piano, then had AIVA generate several pieces of music “influenced” by Abels’ example. Abels then used the results as inspiration for “Gift of the Machine.”

Why They Altered Notes:
1) Not playable by one pianist or even one piano.
2) Gave piece structure, melodies, and harmonies in ways that resembled the AI's output but improved upon it

Dana Leong

Title: iDragon
AI Software: AIVA

How they used AI:
1) Uploaded his previous orchestration of Chinese Folk Song “Heirs of the Dragon”
2)Generated 7 stylistically influenced renditions
3)Pulled phrases and instrumentation choices from AI generated renditions to create a new tapestry
4)Added Human Composition of melody, rhythm (at the time Aiva did not have Drum option) and recorded ‘live’ rendition

Why they had to alter notes: To choose segments that matched stylistic aesthetically.

David Lang

Title: out of body
Performer: Hilary Hahn

How they used AI:
AI and human to have equal number of notes.
1) Uploaded beginning of this piece which was human composed and picked an influence.
2) Evaluated 22 different generated samples of different influences ranging from Lady Gaga, to Bach, to Metallica.
3) Selected the 1980s band Journey-influenced clip
4) Laid out AI generated clips exactly as it was.
